Beat the Cold: Winter Skincare Tips

If you’re in the colder climates, then you know the winter skin blues! Winter months can be incredibly difficult for your skin. Dry and cool air creating irritated and chapped skin, it’s a nightmare! Luckily, we’re here with Picky Expert Dr. Prashi for some winter skincare tips to help.

#1. Hydration

Hydration doesn’t just mean adding more hydrating ingredients to your routine. It also means drinking plenty of water! To keep those hydration levels high, meaning happy skin, then drink enough water and possibly invest in a humidifier to keep a good moisture level in your home.

Want some ingredients to help with hydration? We have a whole guide right here to help!

#2. Exfoliate Less

Next tip is to do less! Exfoliating is great for stripping those dead skin cells and brightening your overall skin tone, but be careful during the colder months. Your skin barrier is already compromised at this time, so over-exfoliating already sensitive skin can lead to even more irritation! Be careful and listen to your skin, but we recommend limiting exfoliation to just once a week. And if you have very dry skin, exfoliate extra lightly!

There’s different types of exfoliators out there, so find the right one for you with our Picky Guide on Exfoliators!

#3. Keep Your Routine

Don’t change up your routine too much, instead just add 1 or 2 extra hydrating serums or substitute a more heavy-duty moisturizer! This can help tackle that dehydrated skin. Look for products with ceramides or hyaluronic acid!

If you’re a bit lost on which moisturizer would be best for your skin, then check out our guide to moisturizers here. Also take a peek at our ceramide and hyaluronic acid ingredient spotlight for more insight!

#4. Limit Shower Time

Take it easy with those hot showers. We know they’re hard to resist when it’s cold out, but hot showers can strip your body of their natural oils. This can lead to cracks in the surface of your skin! So try to limit showers to 10-15 minutes with lukewarm water. And make sure to follow up with a moisturizer immediately afterwards!

Extra winter skincare tip: Carry a small moisturizer with you. This way you can easily reapply to chapped hands, especially with all the handwashing we do these days!

#5. SPF Always

Doesn’t matter if it’s 100 degrees or -20, wear that sunscreen! Protecting your skin, despite the weather, is essential to keeping your barrier strong and shielded from UV damage.

  1. I finally invested in a whole-house humidifier last year and *still* can’t believe the difference it’s made in my partner’s and my skin. Not a particularly exciting purchase, but if you have chronic skin conditions that worsen in winter (or if your “winter skin” is painfully dry and cracked), a humidifier could be the most effective.

I always glossed over the “get a humidifier!”part in articles like these. Living in a humid climate, I couldn’t believe I was supposed to put water into the air after spending most of the year *removing* gallons of it daily it with a DEhumidifier. But seriously: you notice a difference within a day.

They come at all price points and with varying levels of maintenance involved, but you can buy a personal humidifier for the price of a mid-range skincare product. We’ve all tried skincare products we weren’t sure would work…why not try a humidifier?

  2. THANKS FOR THOSE 5 GREAT SKINCARE TIPS. I REALLY FOUND THIS VERY HELPFUL. .WINTER HAS REALLY CAUSE SO MUCH PROBLEMS ON THE SKIN
